Warning:
This process will delete everything on your phone including pictures and video!Although rooting your phone is virtually harmless, doing so will void your warranty. Please proceed at your own risk.
Getting Started:
Alright, the first thing you're going to want to do is download and extract the appropriate toolkit for your device. To extract the rar file, you can use the free program called Rar extract frog (link above). Afterwards, download the superuser.zip, you will need it later.
What You'll Need:
- HTC One
- Sprint Toolkit
- T-Mobile Toolkit
- AT&T Toolkit
- International Toolkit
- Rar extract Frog
- Superuser.zip
Step 1:
Now open the program. The first thing we need to do is install the HTC drivers. Make sure your device is disconnected to your pc. Select option #1 and hit go.
Step 2:
Next you need to register at HTC Dev site. Select option #2 and hit go. After signing up, don't forget to check your email to activate your account.
Step 3:
Connect your device to the computer with USB debugging enabled. (To enable USB debugging go to settings---developer options---and check usb debugging). On the toolkit, select the option to get token ID. Your device will reboot into bootloader. Once it's in bootloader, close the command window on the computer and a second one will pop up with your token id.
Step 4:
Now open up a program like notepad and copy and paste your whole token id number to a blank text file.
Step 5:
Select the Submit Token ID option and hit go. This will take you to HTC Dev Website where you will need to input the token ID. Once you hit submit, you will receive the unlock.bin file in your email.
Step 6:
Now select the Unlock bootloader option. It will prompt you to select the location of the unlock.bin file you downloaded earlier from your email. After selecting it, your phone will prompt you with the option to unlock the bootloader. Use the volume rocker to select yes. Remember this will erase everything. After selecting yes, your phone will reboot. Congratulations, your bootloader is unlocked.
Step 7:Flashing a Recovery
In order to gain root, you will need to first flash a recovery. Slide over to the right side of the program where you will see either TWRP or CWM depending on your HTC One variant. Select one, and hit flash recovery.
Step 8: Getting Root
Finally in order to gain root you will need to flash the Superuser.zip that you downloaded earlier. First, copy the superuser.zip to your phone. Then, with your phone still connected to your pc, in the toolkit there are command options in the bottom box. Select the one that says "Boot into Recovery." Your phone will now boot into recovery. Inside of recovery go to the flash zip option, choose the superuser.zip then select flash. Viola! You are now rooted.
